We have discovered some troublesome information to share with you concerning the Shem Creek parking garage plans. During the design approval process for the parking garage, once the developer realized that the project could not fit within the zoning limits available on the property, the Town's staff allowed the building plans to encroach 30 feet into the Marine District zoning area that was created to protect the Shem Creek waterfront. The move amounted to a rezoning of the property without the public ever receiving notice that this decision had been made. Office space is not an allowed use in the Marine District, and the parking garage will be about 20 feet taller than the height limit for Shem Creek. We'll have much more information on this Monday so you can be fully informed prior to Tuesday night's pivotal Town Council meeting.
