The Mayor has proposed an ordinance change to be discussed at Monday’s Legal Committee meeting that would require the backing of three members of Town Council in order to have an item placed on the agenda of Town Council meetings. This is being done in the name of “efficiency” in order to speed Town Council meetings and drive discussion toward the more informal Committee level meetings.
Save Shem Creek Corp. firmly opposes the ordinance change, however. Perhaps there are ways to improve the efficiency of Town Council meetings, but any change that threatens to reduce civic discourse and our citizens’ access to municipal government is simply undemocratic. In addition, the Committee meetings are held on weekdays during daytime hours when the vast majority of the Town’s citizens are at work and cannot attend the meetings.
